THINGS TO DO IN THE NOTCH

Comfort Notch and the surrounding area is a magical place, no matter the season!  Hiking trails criss-cross the land surrounding “the Notch,” providing opportunities for the best bird-watching in New England! Close to Comfort Notch, enjoy canoeing on Lake Winnipesaukee or exploring the foothills of the Ossipee Mountain Range. If you’re really adventurous and want to drive up the highest peak in the Northeast, Mount Washington is closer than you think!

A COMFORT NOTCH FOR ALL SEASONS

Comfort Notch is proud to be the regions’s #1 destination for the most beautiful fall foliage during Autumn. But we also have plenty of activities during Summer and Winter, too!  Check out the activities, how to gear up, and get to where you want to go!

NOTE TO VISITORS:  COVID-19 may impact some activities.

SUMMER

Bird watching and hiking:  Lace up your trail shoes, grab your binoculars and trail map and spend the days in the woods! If you need to buy (or rent) binoculars, Mr. Hannigan’s Comfort Notch Creations: Souvenir Shoppe has everything you need!  Please note:  Comfort Notch Visitor’s Bureau and Mayor Hal Hardy consider our visitors’ safety of the utmost importance.  We request all birders and hikers stick to the marked trails. Under NO circumstances are visitors to leave the established paths.

Horseback riding:  Head over to Comfort Notch’s Creature Comforts Stables! Whether you’re an experienced rider or a beginner, Kathy at Creature Comforts will ensure she pairs you with the best equine companion for you!  Lessons are available, as well as organized trail rides.

Lakes: Comfort Notch is nestled in the Lakes Region. Lake Winnipesaukee awaits!  Creature Comforts Stables can also rent you the canoe, kayak, or other equipment you need. If you want to explore by horseback and kayak, ask Kathy for the special!

Up the mountains: Whether Ossipee mountains or the legendary Mt. Washington, New Hampshire is a state that offers everything.

Antiquing:  New England sports some of the best antiquing in the United States!  Start your antiquing tour at Grandma Gilly’s Junque Drawer, hit Lewis’ This and That, and then follow the free ‘tiquing guide available at the Visitor’s Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce (both located off the Town Square north).

Covered bridge tour:  Comfort Notch has one of the oldest existing covered bridges in New England. Start in Comfort Notch as your home base, and take the New Hampshire Covered Bridge tour! Information available at Mr. Hannigan’s!

AUTUMN

Our most popular season! In the fall, everything visitors participated in is still in full swing … but this time, with scarlet reds, glittering golds, and burnished oranges with Autumn foliage!  While Comfort Notch does not participate in foliage tours of their spectacular ancient forests (due to preservation concerns), contact Jenny Green, Director of the Comfort Notch Visitor’s Bureau, to get recommendations on the best leaf-peeping in surrounding towns!

WINTER

Comfort Notch in Winter is a wonderland! Cross-country skiing on pre-determined trails, sledding on the Notch’s famous Nub, and ice skating abound!

SPRING

In Spring, Comfort Notch rests up and prepares for the year to come! No, we’re not closed (we have one of the region’s prettiest pansy garden parties on the Town Green!), but activities are limited. If you’d like to use Comfort Notch as your “home base,” we’d love to host you!
